A tale of two Cochylis

Hi everyone I had two Cochylis in the trap in Longwick this morning with little else of note but some crowd pleasers!

The first is 6mm and the second is 7mm (Fw length) so they seemed different but I appreciate the overlap in fw length mentioned in Sterling and Parsons.

However having looked closely, although they do appear to differ to some degree ( one appears browner?) I concluded they were both Hybridella. But am I right?

  1. Hi Andrew,
I agree that they're both the same species but that is molliculana again for me (the yellowish palps are a give-away). I haven't seen hybridella yet this year but it should have white head/palps/thorax.

  2. Thank you Dave - a new one for me. I can see the yellow palps now. I even tried Razowski but that didn't help much!

I forgot to mention that I did keep hold of the putative Light Feathered Rustic as it expired quite soon after capture.

  3. Oh, that's good (in a pot in the freezer? - that's the best place for it). Are your dumicolana still flying?

  4. Indeed it is Dave - along with the Dark Crimson Underwing I am saving for Martin!

Dumicolana is indeed flying nicely with 8 to 10 visible yesterday afternoon. It will continue until early summer before a gap prior to the second autumn generation. I even had one in the trap last night but any plans to check with neighbours on whether it has spread have understandably been delayed!
