Lures

Hi,

I have never used a lure yet but am interested in trying. I wondered if anyone could give me some basic advice for what to get for moths in the Thames Valley area - I am on West Oxford to be a bit more precise.

    Hi Richard I would just buy the full set they last for years in the freezer. Bucket traps are also very useful as some species don't stay long. I look forward to seeing the records in iRecord. Regards

    Hi Richard,

    You may need to speak to Jon Clifton to see what he has left, but there do appear to be at least some lures still available on the ALS web-site:

    Most of the clearwing species are at least a possibility in our area with the exception of Dusky, Welsh, Thrift & Fiery so I'd recommend getting what you can of the others. As Martin says, they last for years if kept in the freezer when not in use. ALS provide instructions on their use (and which ones to try for which species) with each order. I'd thoroughly recommend getting at least a couple of traps too because otherwise it can prove very time consuming sitting around watching your lure(s) hanging from a branch - and you do have to watch them continuously because some species only make a very brief appearance before realising they've been conned and flying off!

    I would think you'd have no trouble getting Currant, Orange-tailed, Red-belted & Red-tipped at the very least.

    I did this a while back so not sure if it needs any updating (the number of records shown for Berkshire is certainly out of date), but there is a spreadsheet listing the lures, species, habitats and flight periods here:
