Id help please for moth living dangerously

Avoided treading on this moth sitting on a primrose leaf in my 'lawn' in Jordans yesterday.  Trying and so far failing to identify it - hope someone can help please!

    1. Thanks Dave. Don't think there's alder round here so lava must be feeding on birch in wood opposite.

  2. Yes, it is a bit of a misnomer really because alder isn't its only larval food-plant! The moth is fairly widespread in woodland across all three of our counties.
