Ethmia bipunctella

A couple of weeks ago I caught a glimpse of a large, black and white micro sitting on an oak tree trunk in the sun. It flew off before I got a good look. Looking through the field guide it looked like Ethmia bipunctella but I dismissed this as being very unlikely. However last night this one appeared in my trap.

  1. Wow - a very nice record! I wonder if that might be a first for VC23?

  2. John Langmaid's maps show records from VC22 and VC24 but, as far as I can see, none for VC23. There's just the one for Berkshire (1991, Uffingham) and the Bucks record seems to be a very old one from Meyrick (1927) mentioned in Ent Rec Vol.90 p.275. As there's nothing in the VC24 database I presume Martin has been unable to find evidence to back it up! So definitely a rare moth in our area.

  3. Dave, Thank you for the information. I'll let Martin Townsend know. It is good to get something rare and with no question about identification.
