Nemapogon variatella

I had identified this as N. cloacella (Cork Moth) but it's been suggested that it might well be N. variatella. It was trapped at woodland near Witney. Would appreciate any thoughts...

  1. Hi Nic,

That looks good to me for Nemapogon variatella (lighter overall than cloacella with a white head and the central dark bar doesn't form an anvil shape). It seems to be fairly widespread in the SE of the UK and is spreading (it has been seen in all three of our counties) so there's no reason why you shouldn't have found it.

Hopefully you still have the moth. According to BC's micro-moth verification guidelines it is classed as '4' (dissection required) so it will be between you and your CMR as to whether the record is accepted.

  2. Thanks very much Dave.
Alas the moth is long gone. Which is good news for the moth I suppose.
    Regards,
    Nic.
