MV Bulbs - ballasted or not?

 Hi

I'm in the process of ordering a new 125w MV bulb for my trap. I have a 125w ballast made by Paul Batty and it all works fine, if a little hot sometimes.

I noticed on EBAY you can buy BHPM  160w MV bulbs that can be plugged directly into the mains without a ballast. Has anyone tried this? Do you notice any difference in moth numbers or variety?  All thought welcome. Thanks

  1. Hi Andrew,

Have a look at the Anglian Leps bulb guide here:

I think it is generally accepted to be useful for trapping abroad (I use one myself to avoid having to carry the heavy control gear) but I've never operated one at home. They run quite a bit hotter than a 125wt bulb and are supposed to be far more susceptible to blowing in any kind of precipitation.

  2. Hi Andrew,
I have only ever used the 160W bulbs (for a number of years) with a home-made trap; they do run hot and I am careful about rain which can restrict my trapping somewhat. Although I have had no problems, I also run the power cable through a separate circuit breaker at the socket.

    1. Thanks for the feedback John. I think I'll give both a try and compare and contrast!
