A couple more from last night. The first (7mm in length) looks like Metalampra italica. From the field guide this looked unlikely but looking at county websites it now seems more widespread. I think the second (6mm in length) is Bryotropha domestica but I have been wrong before with this group.
Andy Newbold, Sibford Ferris, Oxon.
First looks like Metalampra italica to me. It used to be rare but is now much commoner in the recording area - I've had a couple already this year.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I got the impression it was on the increase.
ReplyDeleteI think you are probably correct with the Bryotropha, Andy.
ReplyDeleteAs Adam says, Metalampra italica has really taken off in the past few years. I had my first garden record in 2015 and didn't see it the following year but from 2017 onwards it has appeared regularly (five so far this year).
Thank you. The recent arrivals seem to get to Sibford eventually although there is quite a list of ones I am still waiting for!
DeleteOf interest, I swept a couple of Metalampra italica from a Yew tree in Egypt Woods a couple of weeks ago. For me, a daytime random sweep would indicate that the moth is probably thriving in our 'untidier' woodland.
