Some micro ID help

 Hi All

Definitely entering peak moth season. A couple of micros that this novice needs help with:-

Yes, I know it is horribly out of focus, but it wouldn't sit still! My guess is Catoptria pinella.  Slightly surprising as it is listed as a species of boggy, marshland habitats which doesn't really describe my town centre location in Wokingham.

Second one I am a little more confident is Endotricha flammealis.

Thanks.

Sean

  1. Hello Sean,
In my experience Catoptria pinella could turn up anywhere locally and that is certainly what your moth is. It makes a pleasant change from some of the more common but rather less colourful "grass moths". The other one is, as you say, Endotricha flammealis which uses a couple of different resting positions to confuse the unwary (the same is true of its relatives Hypsopygia costalis and Hypsopygia glaucinalis).

    1. Thank you Dave, helpful as always. Funnily enough, when I was photographing the Endotricha I was reminded of the posture of the Gold Triangle (Hypsopygia costalis) I had last year. Interesting to note that they are related.

      Regards

      Sean
