Lychnis

Despite going through the books, posts, photos etc I still can't really tell the Lychnis from the Campion, I read about where the two ovals meet and it makes sense, then I look at photos and I can't see it. I think this one is a Lychnis?

First time I've had a Thistle Ermine, never realised they were so big. Also at least 3 Red-belted clearwings to pheromone lure this morning.

  1. Hi Mark, it is tricky but I think this is a Lychnis - while the inner edge of the kidney mark is a bit distorted towards the oval mark it does not join it (or almost join it), and more clearly the subterminal pale line curves towards the wing base to join the dorsum before the trailing corner (while for the Campion it bends in the opposite direction to approach the corner i.e., it carries on zig-zagging to the dorsal end)
