Two dozen eggs

I found these eggs on a garden table near the trap this morning - only noticing them when I was photographing a Small Elephant Hawk. Any thoughts? They may not even be moth eggs but I've popped them in a box with an assortment of leaves to see what happens.  Martin Wainwright, Thrupp, Oxon.

  1. Hi Martin,
Small Elephant Hawk-moth eggs are green so I suspect you have the culprit in your picture! The preferred food-plant of their caterpillars is Lady's Bedstraw.

The late Reg Fry's website gives a series of pictures showing the progression from egg to adult:

(then use the slider to find Small Elephant Hawk)

  2. Thanks very much, Dave. I'm off on a Lady's Bedstraw hunt...
