A breakfast guest

The night-time moths are picking up at last but my Star of the Year just joined us at breakfast outside: this Narrow-bordered Bee Hawk, a moth I have not previously seen in the UK.  At my great age, this is quite a rare thing for me to say.  Hope you are enjoying the sun as much as it was!  Martin Wainwright, Thrupp, Oxon

  1. Well, well well - what a lovely sight!! I understand that there is a known colony over towards Faringdon but this gives us all hope that it is re-establishing itself in our area. Here's hoping...!

  2. I’m so pleased, specially after this year’s unexciting start. I assumed it was a Hummingbird and went to get my iPhone. It had gone when I got back but returned immediately afterwards. It was nectaring in really hot sunshine at 9.30am on aubrietia, ceanothus and dwarf phlox. I’m asking everyone on our local WhatsApp etc to keep an eye out.
