Plenty of interest in East Oxford over the last fortnight with a new macro to the garden: Peacock Moth, and as many are reporting, good numbers of Alder Moth (3rd -6th records here). Other species in unusually good numbers for this site include Puss Moth, with 6 individuals so far.
Perhaps of more significance is this Tortrix caught last night (17/6) which seems to me a good match for Grapholita lobarzewskii - or Kent Fruit-Piercer. I think it has been recorded in the region before, though Sterling & Parsons list it as very local, and the map doesn't seem to cover quite our region.
Putative Grapholita lobarzewskii, East Oxford 17 June 2021
Can't confirm or deny the ID but I've had it several times here in Garsington just a couple of miles south east of Oxford.
ReplyDeleteHi Ben,
ReplyDeleteIt does look as if it could well be lobarzewskii, although a photo outside the pot would make life much easier (the glass tends to distort and subdues colours so you don't always get a true representation). As Mark infers, these days the moth is much more widespread than the Field Guide indicates.
Thanks Mark & Dave. I'll try for a better image, but think my camera and the light the last two days have not been helping
