Striped hawk-moth

I was so excited to see a Striped hawk-moth in the trap this morning! A first for me, though I'm not sure if Dave had caught one in our garden in the past?

I'm stuck on this one...it wouldn't settle and was annoying the hawk-moth, so I opened the lid and let it go! I feel I should know what it is, many thanks!

  1. Hello Jo,

Brilliant - Very Well Done! I've been hoping a migrant Striped Hawk would appear somewhere in Bucks because it is having a good year and has already turned up in quite a lot of places inland. It seems that Dave wasn't lucky with this one because as far as I'm aware there are only three previous records for the county, from Chesham Bois (1996, John Chainey), Milton Keynes (2002, Les Hill) and one I was lucky to get while trapping on the top of Brill Hill in 2009. Now Aylesbury can be added to that very short list!

I'm afraid I can't work out what the other moth is for sure, but possibly something like Shuttle-shaped Dart?

  2. The released moth looks like a Mullein with that large straw coloured wing and dark central area.

  3. Well done Jo, excellent record.
Two more county records to add to the ones Dave gave. Mursley one in 2015 from Mick Jones and one from 1867 in the Wolverton area.
The 4 recent records have been between 12th May and 7th June, so yours is the latest record.
What other migrants are lurking out there!

  4. Could the mystery moth be a Flame?

  5. Thanks everyone for your comments- I must admit I didn't realise at the time that the Striped hawk-moth was such a rarity! You never know what's going to turn up do you! I didn't log the mystery moth but thanks Adam and Andrew for your help.
