Many thanks again for help with my micros (one of which turned out to be a caddis fly). Now I have three macros, with apologies for my uncertainty. Might the two pugs be worn Double-striped? And is the indoors moth - apols for evening electric light - a Lilac Beauty? I thought it was a Small Scallop but a commentor on my own blog suggest LB. Help much appreciated, as always.

Hello Martin,
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid neither of the Pugs is Double-striped. The second looks good for Maple and the first might be that species too but I'm not certain. The other moth, which looks as if it is on its last legs, is not Lilac Beauty but is an Early Thorn (the first picture is a bit misleading showing the upper surface which is not usually visible when the moth is at rest). If it did expire you could call it a Late Early Thorn...
Hi Dave
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for expertise on both. Regarding pugs, I'm afraid I adopt the deplorable attitude of a former neighbour's daughter: "I give up, I really do". The late Early Thorn is more reassuring as I had perceived something Thornlike about the moth but thought it was too small. Thank the Lord for UTM! All warm wishes as ever. M
The first pug is also Maple.
