Dark Crimson Underwing

The last egg box inspected this morning at Linford Lakes Nature Reserve moth trap contained this not so little beauty.  A "W" shape can be made out on the black central band on the hind wing and there is a double prong on the outer central cross-line in leading half.

Photograph is not great and was taken through pot lid as I did not want to lose it and wanted to see the hind wing.
It was one of around 65 species recorded there this morning including Crescent, Mere Wainscot, Webb's Wainscot and Tree Lichen Beauty.

  1. Brilliant, Gordon! Fingers crossed for when I go through my own garden traps shortly...

  2. Well done Gordon. Only the third record in modern times, the other two being in the last 2 years.

  3. Fantastic, well done Gordon. Good number of moths here, down south, last night, but nothing very exciting.
