ID help

Hello. These are 2 casual sightings which I need help with.

The first image I think might be a Horisme tersata/Fern; the mortar joint it is resting on is 12mm wide and the colour seems 'off ' due to the situation but wing shape and markings have got me thinking, maybe? Photo taken on 25 June.

The second sighting and associated images were taken on 7 July of a Notocelia species. I have just come across comments made by John Thacker and Dave Wilton on this blog this am and not yet checked out John's advice. And these are not good photos but is this N. roborana, possibly?

  1. Hello Isobel,
The first is indeed Fern. The species has recently been split into two (the other being Cryptic Fern Horisme radicaria) but the "new" species hasn't yet been found in our area. The other moth is actually a Spilonota rather than a Notocelia and looks good for Spilonota ocellana. There are several vaguely similar-looking tortrix species but this one is distinguishable by the obvious dark spot on its back at two-thirds.

  2. Thank you, Dave. Interesting about Cryptic Fern, which I will hope to bear in mind in future and perhaps retain a specimen. Certainly, the colour 'brown' fits better with H. radicaria and the discal spot much less prominent but not absent.
